For a long time, I held onto my DSLR gear even after I stopped reaching for it regularly. My Canon 6D, Canon 5D Mark IV, and several heavy lenses had served me well over the years — but most of the time, they were sitting unused.
There wasn’t anything wrong with the gear. It still worked beautifully. It just no longer fit how I shoot today. Eventually, I realized that holding onto equipment I wasn’t using didn’t make much sense, and it was time to rethink what I actually wanted from my camera setup.
Why I Decided to Sell My DSLR Gear
The decision to sell my DSLR gear wasn’t about chasing the newest technology — it was about practicality. The picture above on the left is the SLR weighing 4.5lbs. The one on the right was a mirrorless camera with the same lens, weighing 2.5lb (without the camera).
Between work, family, and a busy schedule around soccer, I didn’t always have the time or energy to carry heavy gear. The camera bodies were substantial, and the lenses even more so. For travel, quick outings, or long days moving between games and activities, I found myself avoiding the gear altogether.
Photography should feel enjoyable and accessible, not like something that requires planning around weight and logistics. That realization played a big role in my decision to let go of my DSLR setup.
What I Ended Up Selling
I eventually sold:
Canon 6D
Canon 5D Mark IV
Several heavy Canon lenses I wasn’t realistically going to carry anymore
These were all great pieces of gear, but I knew someone else could put them to better use instead of sitting on a shelf.
Where I Sold My Camera Gear
After looking at a few options, I decided to sell my gear through MPB. I didn’t want to deal with listing fees, low-ball offers, or coordinating meet-ups with strangers.
The process was genuinely easy. I received a quote, shipped the gear in, and once it was inspected, the payment was deposited shortly after they received it. I got a fair deal, and everything was handled without stress.
Buying Used Gear on MPB, Too
I’ve also bought used gear on MPB. One example is the Sony DSC-RX100 V, which is extremely popular and often hard to find. Teenagers are obsessed with used point and shoot and this one is extremely popular. They come in different versions and I found V the right fit. (will review this another day!)

What’s in My Camera Bag Now
Since selling my old DSLR gear, this is what I’ve been reaching for most.
Sony DSC-RX100 V
A compact camera I grab when I want something lightweight but still capable. It’s great for everyday use and travel, and it’s popular for a reason.
Fujifilm X100V
Another camera I love and can confidently recommend. I don’t have a full review up yet, but it’s one of those cameras that’s genuinely hard to get — I ended up buying mine from Adorama when it was finally in stock.
Sony Full-Frame Mirrorless Lenses (FE Mount)
After selling my heavier DSLR lenses, I moved toward lighter full-frame mirrorless camera and lenses which is a bit lighter than the SLRs. Â
